In recent years, Pittsburgh’s art community has gained acclaim among onlookers near and far. The Atlantic, NPR, and countless media outlets have made it a point to share our art scene with the world. At the same time, the number of museums, art galleries, public art displays, and DIY spaces have helped showcase the talent that exists in Pittsburgh.

Of course, we’ve noticed. But some of the biggest names in the art world have taken notice too. First came the news that James Turrell would donate one of his “Skyspace” works to the Mattress Factory’s permanent collection. And now, one of the world’s most significant artists will be making an appearance in Pittsburgh.

On the weekend of June 4, the exhibit “Andy Warhol/Ai Weiwei” opens at the Andy Warhol Museum. But not before Ai Weiwei, the contemporary artist and activist known for his work challenging the Chinese regime, joins the Warhol’s Director Eric Shiner in a public forum on Thursday, June 2. In Discussion: Ai Weiwei and Eric Shiner is a conversation intended to explore the parallels, intersections, and points of difference between Weiwei and Warhol.

The following day, June 3, The Warhol offers free general admission to celebrate the opening of Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei, an exhibit that will be on display through August 28, 2016. Throughout the day, visitors will be invited to get involved in all sorts of ways, including a cash bar and a chance to make art of your own. For those of you who like to stay up late, DJ Pandemic will be spinning live tunes at the end of the evening.
