Every year the Dapper Dan Awards honor the best in Pittsburgh sports. And this year is no exception. The honorees for the big event include Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner, University of Pittsburgh Athletic Director Heather Lyke, Pittsburgh Penguins President David Morehouse, and NFL Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dapper Dan Charities have been going strong since it was established in the 1930’s–and is now one of the biggest non-profit and fundraising community sports clubs in the world. Few cities can even compete with the list of pro’s that have won the award throughout the years. It’s extraordinary to glance at the list of names who have taken home the famous Dapper Dan award throughout the years. From football legends like Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris, hockey icons Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby, golf’s greatest Arnold Palmer and wrestling royalty Kurt Angle; baseball all-time greats Roberto Clemente and Andrew McCutchen; the list showcases how many amazing athletes have represented the Pittsburgh area. The steel city knows how many awesome athletes we’ve cheered for throughout the years, but it’s truly remarkable how many sports stars can call the Burgh their home.
How entertaining will it be when The Bus receives the lifetime achievement award?! He’s been a staple of the Pittsburgh region since he became a Steeler back in 1996. James Conner is also a hometown favorite–a former Pitt Panther, cancer survivor, and recent selection to the Pro Bowl, Conner has taken over as the Steelers future running back. Speaking of Pitt, Heather Lyke is transforming Pitt sports both on and off the field, helping to renovate a lot of Pitt’s on-campus athletic facilities. Switching over to the ice–David Morehouse is gearing up for another Penguins playoff run. Yes, it’s almost that time of year again!
It’s not often that you have an opportunity to be in the same room as these Pittsburgh icons. Aside from the awards, there’s an awesome dinner and sports auction, which is sure to have some unbelievable signed memorabilia. The money raised at the Dapper Dan awards goes to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania.
