Permanent bracelets first came on the scene a few years ago in New York, when one jewelry shop had the idea to use a welding pen to affix fine metal bracelets permanently closed around your wrist. It’s not nearly as intimidating as it may sound, and now that the trend has hit Pittsburgh, you can try it for yourself! MetaMorph Jewelry Studio, which just recently opened its in-person shop, is hosting pop-up permanent jewelry bar sessions where you can get your own “forever accessory.”
Currently, you can choose between several chain designs that are either 14K gold-filled or 925 sterling silver. Silver styles are $35 each, and gold styles are either $40 or $45. With three designs available in each metal, you can absolutely find a delicate style that will match your aesthetic and complement any other daily jewelry that you wear.
The process is super quick and totally painless. You are getting metal welded closed around your wrist, but there’s nothing to be scared of at all – the welding tip is about the same size as the tip of a pen, and it never touches your skin. You will have to wear a pair of safety glasses to protect your eyes from the light of the welding, but that’s it! The whole process takes less than five minutes.
You may be wondering, “is it really permanent?” The short answer is yes! It’s not like a tattoo – nothing is happening to your skin at all. It just means that you can wear the bracelet as long as you want to, though there is a possibility that the bracelet will break with more-than-typical wear and tear. They are pretty delicate, and while they may last a lifetime if you choose, some may only last a few years or less if you’re pretty active or use your hands a lot. (You can always choose to add a clasp to turn the bracelet into a regular one for a small fee if it breaks or if you’re worried about losing it!)
Planning to be a globetrotter this year? No worries! MetaMorph’s permanent bracelets are safe for travel and don’t need to be removed at any TSA checkpoint – just like any other jewelry you might wear day-to-day.
If you do need to get your bracelet taken off for any reason, such as a scheduled MRI or X-ray appointment, you can schedule a removal appointment at MetaMorph and have it re-welded after your appointment. Of course, emergencies can happen, but if you know you’ll need it taken off, it’s best to schedule as soon as you know!
Whether you’re looking for a meaningful way to celebrate loving yourself or want to plan a fun group activity with your besties for a birthday or other special occasion, you’re welcome to book a solo appointment at MetaMorph or a booking for a larger group – though groups of four or more should call ahead to make arrangements. (And don’t forget, anyone under 18 needs to be accompanied by a legal guardian!)
In addition to their signature permanent bracelet bar, MetaMorph offers a full range of handcrafted jewelry with seasonal flair and one-of-a-kind designs, from earrings and rings to necklaces and bracelets. Their gorgeous Etna shop also carries lifestyle gifts like home decor, body products, teas and spices, and stunning stationery. Check out their website to place an order (or preorder your permanent bracelet!) and take a trip to their shop Tuesday through Saturday to browse in person.
