For those in the market for new furniture–for their home, office, or another space–a new store boasting approachable, modern styles has opened in Pittsburgh. Design Within Reach (DWR) opened its doors to their first Western PA store at The Strip District Terminal (1600 Smallman St.).

Closing the loop as the final tenant to bring The Terminal to full occupancy, DWR has already become a notable stop for luxury home furnishings without the pressure. This 8,000-square-foot showroom is an inspiring design destination and place of discovery for homeowners, small business owners, interior designers, and design enthusiasts alike.

We chatted with Debbie Propst, president of global retail for MillerKnoll (the collective of design brands that includes DWR) on the mark DWR is making on Pittsburgh.

What is the importance of opening DWR in the PGH community?

“Opening a DWR store in Pittsburgh is especially meaningful given the city’s deep-rooted appreciation for modern design, craftsmanship, and architectural history. Pittsburgh has long been a center of innovation, and we see strong alignment between DWR’s commitment to enduring, well-designed furnishings and the city’s modernist legacy.”

What can shoppers expect to find at DWR?

“Shoppers can expect a curated assortment of authentic modern furniture, lighting, art, flooring, and accessories from some of the most respected designers around the world—ranging from iconic classics to designs shaping the future of modern living. Every piece at DWR is selected for its exceptional craftsmanship, durability, and innovation.

The Pittsburgh store is designed as a place of discovery, whether you’re furnishing your first home, refreshing a single room, or working on a larger residential or commercial project.”

What might shoppers be surprised to see in the showroom?

“DWR’s expansive portfolio of exclusive offerings is what really sets us apart. Whether it is a style, material, or colorway, our collection of designs that you can only find at DWR is distinctive. For example, you might find a USM Haller storage unit in our exclusive Sahara color, or a Louis Poulsen Panthella Lamp in Burgundy, on the floor.

I also think one of the most surprising elements for visitors will be how immersive the experience is. Beyond the furniture itself, the space features large-scale material swatches, thoughtful vignettes, and access to complimentary Design Concierge services. Customers can work one-on-one with expert associates on everything from custom orders to 3D renderings of their homes—all at no additional cost.”

A nod to Pittsburgh and creative expression

“DWR Pittsburgh was intentionally designed to reflect the character of the city. The store’s industrial tones, exposed timber ceilings, steel columns, and expansive glass façade reference the building’s original 1929 use as the Pennsylvania Railroad Fruit Auction & Sales Building. It’s worth knowing that this space was created to be open, approachable, and inspiring—a place where you can explore great design, take your time, and receive personalized guidance without pressure. Whether you’re deeply involved in the industry or simply curious about modern design, the store is meant to feel like a natural extension of the community.”

You just might find your next cozy couch, stunning floor lamp or eco-friendly rug at DWR! Learn more about the store by visiting their website and following them on Instagram, @designwithinreach.
