We love to indulge in the occasional (or more likely, frequent) bakery treat. Thankfully Pittsburgh is home to excellent bakeries, some that specialize in gluten-free and dairy-free delicacies so those with allergies don’t have to miss out. In the spirit of “treat yo’ self,” we’re highlighting the best spots for gluten-free sweets in the city.
Gluuteny Bakery is one of our favorite dedicated gluten-free sweets stores in the city. From cookies and brownies to cakes and doughnuts, this Squirrel Hill shop bakes everything in-house and from scratch. All of their baked goods are gluten-free, and they even have mixes you can take home. Gluuteny also has dairy-free, soy-free and vegan treats. Stop by their brick-and-mortar store on Murray Ave. or create custom creations online and get your savory treats delivered right to your door.
Gluten Free Goat Bakery & Café
This bakery is our other favorite dedicated gluten-free bakery. Gluten Free Goat Bakery & Café creates gluten-free and vegan treats that are locally sourced. They have you covered for parties as well with specialty cakes and sheet cakes. If you’re craving more than sweets, stop by the café for vegan and vegetarian savory options.
Gigi’s Cupcakes opened its first Pennsylvania location in McCandless Crossing. It isn’t a gluten-free bakery, but they do make our favorite gluten-free cupcakes in town. This bakery offers three different gluten-friendly cupcakes per day. You’ll be tempted to try the flourless Triple Chocolate Torte for sure.
Who would have guessed that ice cream tastes better when it’s rolled? NatuRoll Creamery specializes in a frozen dessert technique where ice cream is flattened, rolled, and topped with goodies. Since you can create your own, it’s easy to make a treat that’s dairy-free, vegan or sugar-free. Getting to watch the ice cream made and assembled right in front of you is half the fun.
Jean-Marc Chatellier’s French Bakery
Colorful macaroons from Jean-Marc Chatellier’s French Bakery are sure to put a smile on your face. This Millvale bakery has authentic French macarons that — best of all — are made with gluten-free ingredients. Pick up a few for yourself, or grab a dozen for a unique gift.
This well-known bakery is widely considered to be one of the best bakeries in the city. While they don’t specialize in gluten-free offerings, Oakmont Bakery does have treats that are made without gluten. From brownies and chocolate chip cookies to truffles and cupcakes, you’ll satisfy your sweet tooth here.
The Milk Shake Factory
Ice cream and chocolate lovers, this one’s for you. The Milk Shake Factory creates handspun shakes, sundaes and chocolates. With locations in Downtown, South Side, East Liberty and Oakland, there are plenty of opportunities to try a gourmet milkshake. They offer dairy-free and vegan options as well.
Josie’s Sweets & Treats
Located in Dormont, Josie’s Sweets & Treats has a variety of gluten-free treats. They bake cookies, cupcakes, and cakes that are available in GF options. Nine ice cream flavors are gluten-free as well. This content was provided by a local, independent contributor to Made in PGH, a lifestyle blog.
