We love to cuddle up on a cold winter evening. There’s nothing better than a cozy blanket and books, more books, and a glass of wine. We’ve already talked about some of our favorite local wineries (here and here), but we wanted to highlight a few of our favorites.

Mazzotta Winery

Located just north of Pittsburgh in Gibsonia, Mazzotta Winery crafts small batches of wine using old-world traditions. Frank learned how to make wine from his father, who learned from his father while growing up in Southern Italy. Their wines have won many awards, but they’re most well known for their fruit wines…which taste like you’re drinking the actual fruit. It’s because they’re made from just the fruit juice – no added flavorings here. If you need to sample before you commit to a bottle, they offer free tastings (no reservation required), or you can book a private tasting for a more in-depth experience. We love that they share a building with Adrian’s Pizza and Six Packs so we can get some takeout (and beer for our non-wine drinkers!) to bring home with our wine.

Their wines are especially cuddly this Valentine’s Day with their Date Night In Box! It’s full of cheeses, dips and spreads, and something sweet for dessert, plus you get to pick out your favorite bottle of wine to enjoy with it. Select a fruit wine for $47 or you can pick red or white for $49. It’s perfect for two…but we won’t judge if you order it for yourself! Boxes have to be reserved by Friday 2/12 and picked up on Sunday 2/14. Don’t feel like stopping by the tasting room? Mazzotta Winery can ship wine to your door, too!

PK Winery

You’ll find PK Winery in McDonald, which is only about half an hour outside of Pittsburgh. They’re a small batch winery owned by husband-and-wife team Mike and Tammy. They started making wine in 2007 and offer over 40 varieties of wine. Their 2019 Keith’s Cabernet even won a Bronze medal at the Finger Lakes International Competition. We love that they offer free tastings because who doesn’t love to taste before you buy! It’s important to know that if you’re drinking at the winery, you’ll have to bring a meal (or the equivalent) with you because of current CDC guidelines. They consider their customers family, which makes us feel so welcome.

PK Winery is also offering some Valentine’s Day specials to cuddle up with, like Hot Cocoa Bombs and truffles infused with their wines. The treats are made by NaNa’s Sweets and Treats in Bentleyville…and supplies are limited so you don’t want to wait for these! If you can’t make it into the winery, which is open Thursday through Sunday, you can also find their wines at the Shop ‘n Saves in Washington and Canonsburg.

R Wine Cellar

You’ll find R Wine Cellar a little closer to Pittsburgh – in the Strip District, in fact. They’re a family urban winery bringing a world of wine tasting and experiences to the city. They use minimal additives and preservatives when crafting their premier wines…which are made from grapes from the best grape-growing regions including California, Pennsylvania, and South America. All of their wines are handcrafted and meticulously blended to produce distinctive yet approachable wines.

R Wine Cellar offers free tastings during their normal business hours, or you can schedule a private tasting or custom private event. They can also create custom labels for everything from birthdays to weddings to holidays, and anything in between. If you’re not heading into the Strip, you can also find a selection of their wines at various Giant Eagle Market Districts, Shop ‘n Saves, and PA Fine Wines and Good Spirits stores around the Pittsburgh area. Check their website for a full list of locations.
