Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 this year. You may be wondering, what is Juneteenth? And what is the significance? Well, in 1865, on June 19th, troops brought news to the last slaves in Galveston, Texas that they were free. This was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It is very important to recognize and remember the history and significance of this holiday. There must be additional action as well though, such as going further to educate yourself, celebrating with your local community, and supporting Black-owned businesses year-round– not just around this holiday.

One of my favorite Black-owned local businesses in Pittsburgh is Back to the Foodture! Back to the Foodture is a restaurant/museum that serves endless wing combos, burgers, grilled hotdogs, and fries.

They also have a great collection of vintage toys, signs, photos, and more on display that bring a sense of nostalgia and comfort.

Personally, I would recommend the Lil Bug, which is a burger with an egg and bacon, but with grilled cheeses for the buns! It’s as tasty as it is photogenic. You can’t go wrong with their wings either– with over 115 rubs and sauces, there’s something for everyone.
