It’s spooky season, and there’s no better way to go all-in on the spooky than to enjoy it with a dark comedy that features a pulsing 1980s soundtrack, gin, and a chainsaw.
To conclude its 21st season, barebones’ productions is featuring the Pittsburgh premiere of Meghan Tyler’s “Crocodile Fever” at the Barebones Black Box theater in Braddock. The show starts Saturday, October 5th and runs Thursdays – Sundays through Sunday, October 20th.
Described by The Guardian as “Like Tarantino for feminists” and by British Theatre as “a bloody masterpiece in every sense,” “Crocodile Fever” is perfect for those loving dark comedies.
The play takes place in Northern Ireland, 1989. A farmhouse window smashes, and rebellious Fianna Devlin crashes back into the life of her pious sister Alannah. Together for the first time in years, when they’re forced to confront their tyrannical father’s hideous legacy, all hell breaks loose.
“This show has teeth and it’s timely right now,” says barebones artistic director Patrick Jordan. “We’re at a pivotal moment in time as a global community, and it’s tense…but there’s laughter to cut that. That’s why barebones is particularly drawn to dark comedies. We want to present thought-provoking art, but we still want to entertain. Plus – for those looking for a unique way to kick off your Halloween season, this one is also for you.”
barebones productions has garnered a reputation for producing high-quality, risk-taking plays that challenge and entertain. With an intimate 65-seat venue, performances involve minimal production elements for maximum impact.
Also, be sure to swing by the Braddock Public House by BG Brewing, located in the main dining room of the theater building to enjoy dinner pre-show and a nightcap after. It’s a great way to maximize the spooky good fun!
