The Carnegie Museum of Art is breathing new life into still life this month. The museum’s show, A Delight for the Senses: The Still Life, is taking place with multiple events throughout the month of November. We’re excited about two events in particular happening on November 16.
First, the CMOA is hosting local artist and Carnegie Mellon University photography professor Charlee Brodsky for an artist talk discussing her work and the still life genre. Charlee Brodsky, a fine art documentary photographer, and curator Akemi May will be talking about the charm of still life and how interest has varied in it throughout the years.
The New Life of Still Life: Charlee Brodsky Artist Talk is a free lecture located in the CMOA Theater.
Brodsky’s most recent work, The Audacity of the Mundane, features objects from her personal life in a series of still lifes. She is well known for using her art to highlight social issues and beauty, and she was named Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in 2012.
After the talk, Brodsky is hosting a hands-on composition workshop. The Still Life Composition Workshop will combine drawing and photography, teaching attendees how to make still life art relevant and the importance of lighting and composition.
Art is meaningful when it’s personal to you! Workshop attendees should bring personal items that are important to them to use in their still life photographs. Cameras and phone cameras can be used for the workshop. The event is $10 to attend, but members and students receive a discounted rate.
