Stay and explore the beautiful Lake County, OH!
Just about two hours from Pittsburgh, Lake County is home to Holden Arboretum, one of the largest arboreta and botanical gardens in the nation. Holden Arboretum fosters a love for nature while working to understand climate impacts on the Lower Great Lakes region and conserving the ecosystem. Located 30 minutes from downtown Cleveland, the Holden Arboretum is a living museum of exquisite collections of plants and trees on 3,500 acres with miles of trails, gardens and woodlands. In bloom this season include spirea, peonies, flowering dogwood, lilacs, roses, and so much more delightful flowers and plants. The ever-changing 10-acre urban oasis features a variety of unique gardens, an exotic Glasshouse and programming for all ages.
While in Lake County, stopping by the picturesque Headlands Beach State Park is a must! This half-mile-long natural sands beach on Lake Erie provides plenty of activities like swimming, beach glass hunting, picnicking, biking and hiking on paved trails and amazing sunset viewing.
Near the beach is a can’t miss view of the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse. This charming 36-foot tower features a museum that is open for summer hours Wednesdays – Sundays from 12pm – 6pm. Browse through many artifacts about life on the Great Lakes and other maritime exhibits. Then, head up the spiral staircase to reach the observation deck for spectacular views of the lake. For some more fun, be sure to ask about the ghost cat story!
There’s so much more to do and see at Lake County. The area is known for its quality wines produced from over 8,400 acres. Many stops along the wine region feature relaxing outdoor patios, tastings and cellar tours. While in Lake County, browse through the many boutique shops and even pay a visit to James A. Garfield’s home (the 20th president of the United States).
This summer trip will be one for the books!
