The ability to explore new-to-you restaurants is a highlight of Pittsburgh Restaurant Week — so we headed out to Wheelfish, tucked away in the North Hills just a brief, neighborhood-streets journey off of McKnight Rd in Ross Township.
Wheelfish generates a rustic vibe especially with its old wood-and-chalk decor and Construction Junction-like reused windows as light-fixture accents. It is a neat, quiet place with many smoked meat options. The Restaurant Week menus are $19.19 for lunch and $26.19 for dinner — and with the ability to add $2 tacos to the deal during lunch heading there for a meaty, taco-y lunch is the way to go. Adding the tacos is a must since they feature a Yinzer taco which is piled-high with buffalo chicken.
Don’t let the name throw you off because the menu is actually meat-intensive (and not round). Meat lovers will definitely enjoy the selection of meats and fans of BBQ sauce will enjoy choosing from the four house BBQ sauces. There are 10 Side options and for lunch the special week’s deal includes a choice of two and at dinner you can pick three. When we went we got pulled pork and kielbasa and rounded out the meal with mac n’ cheese and the Napa slaw. We like our BBQ sauces so we freely mixed-and-matched our meat bites with different ones and we were never disappointed. It was like our mouths took a trip to the Memphis, Texas, and the Carolinas even though we had to head North to get to it.
The one drawback we experienced during the visit was slow-paced service (as in 50 minutes between sitting down and receiving our food despite it not being busy), but the food itself was worth the visit and the wait. And the craft-lover’s draft list and cocktail options will make the time well spent.
