Being from Pittsburgh, we understand how important Steelers Sunday. It’s finally that time of year, when fans gather together, outside Heinz Field rocking out to Styx, Queen and many more Steelers classics, draped in black and yellow jerseys and attire. We thought we would share our favorite tailgate food and drink essentials and what we believe you will need to survive this upcoming season.
What’s more classic than firing up a hot grill to cook some juicy cheeseburgers and hot dogs for a big game? This is what we like to call a classic entre for most tailgate menus. If you’re not a meat eater, veggie burgers are an easy substitution. Just don’t forget your favorite condiments to complete your favorite classic order.
Dips are an essential to any tailgate party. The options are endless! We love the classics like buffalo chicken dip, taco dip, queso and salsa. Recently party goers are starting to get pretty creative when it comes to new recipes like antipasto dip and hoagy dip, just to name few. If you haven’t tried them yet, we suggest jumping onto Google to find a new recipe to impress all your friends.
When we say “salad” we don’t expect anyone to be munching on iceberg lettuce. We typically mean pasta salad, potato salad, macaroni salad and egg salad just to name a few. These all have the word salad after them so they have to be guilt free, right? (wink wink) We do love that these options are easy to prep beforehand and each can feed plenty of people! Have one or two of these at your tailgate and your guests will be thrilled.
The kick off to Steelers season has been a hot one, and while some enjoy the heat, unfortunately it won’t last long. That’s why chilli can be such a crowd pleaser. Like the salad options, chili is easy to make, especially beforehand and most importantly, it will help keep your friends and family warm, toasty and full while fighting the cold before heading into the big game. (We like ours topped with sour cream and cheese. Cornbread is definitely a big bonus).
Pierogies are a Pittsburgh staple so why not dish them out at your tailgate? Serve them up with kielbasa and onions and you got yourself one hearty tailgate meal. We also love enjoying our perogies over a big bowl of Haluski. Serve this at your next tailgate and you’ll be the talk of the town. We can feel the butter on our lips just thinking about this one.
We love hot sausage because of all the different ways it can be served. Slice them to be eaten as a quick appetizer or grill them to be enjoyed in a fresh hoagie bun, throw in some peppers and sauce, and you have yourself a hot sausage hoagie. What more do you need? (Probably a few napkins)
We are big fans of the sub sandwich platters. This is the perfect option for someone who might be crunched for time or doesn’t feeling like whipping up something in their own kitchen (we totally get it). Just make sure you call your favorite grocery store or restaurant of choice ahead of time to give them enough of a heads up!
After all these savory and delicious choices, naturally our minds start to think, whats for dessert? Having easy desserts like cookies, brownies and cupcakes make it perfect to pick up and go. Especially if you’re closing up shop to head into the game. You and your guests can grab one to enjoy while making your way to your gate.
We wanted to save the best for last because really, beer goes without saying. What’s better than eating your favorite tailgate food and washing it down with a cold brew? Probably nothing. Now that football season is finally here, you can find us munching on delicious food and enjoying refreshing drinks every Steelers Sunday, home or away!
