Make this Memorial Day one to remember beyond the BBQs, sunshine, and swimming. This year there’s a unique opportunity to spend some time learning about and honoring our nation’s Vietnam veterans.

A traveling exhibit by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) called “The Wall That Heals” will be on display at Shaler Area High School’s Anderson Field in Shaler Township between Thursday, May 22nd – Monday, May 26th. The exhibit will be open 24 hours a day and is free to the public.

The Wall That Heals is a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The traveling exhibit honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War. It bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

Not only an educational tool for those seeking to learn more about the Vietnam War, The Wall has been especially important for Vietnam veterans. Numerous veterans have been unable to cope with the prospect of facing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., but this exhibit has allowed many of them to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.

Since its debut in 1996, the exhibit has been on display in nearly 800 U.S. communities. This marks only the second time in its 30 year history that The Wall will be in Pittsburgh.

What to Expect at The Wall That Heals Exhibit

The three-quarter scale Wall replica is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. Visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Visitors are able to do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall.

The Wall That Heals is transported from community to community in a 53-foot trailer. When parked, the trailer opens with exhibits built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center.

The Mobile Education Center includes exhibits that tell the story of the Vietnam War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the era surrounding the conflict, and the healing power of the Wall. It provides a rich educational experience for visitors of all ages.

Displays

Hometown Heroes: Photos of service members on The Wall who list their home of record from the local area. The photos are part of The Wall of Faces, an effort to put a face to every name inscribed on The Wall in Washington, D.C.

In Memory Honor Roll: Photos of local Vietnam veterans honored through VVMF’s In Memory program, which honors veterans who returned home and later died. Digital photos are of In Memory honorees from the state where the exhibit is on display.

Items Left Behind: Displays of items representative of those left at The Wall in Washington, D.C. in remembrance of those on The Wall.

There is also a replica of the “In Memory” plaque that resides on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial site in Washington, D.C., video displays about the history and impact of The Wall, a map of Vietnam, and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War.

Two VVMF staff members will be available on site to educate visitors.
