Pittsburgh is known for its sports teams, passionate communities, and innovation. Now, there’s a new sport hitting the ‘Burgh that brings it all together.

Throw Stones. Make Friends. Repeat.

Stones is a team-based, quick-to-learn, ball toss game that’s growing in popularity around Western PA. It’s like bocce’s cooler cousin, plus you can spend some time outside with a drink in hand!

Pittsburgh Stones is the steel city’s Stones community, with a goal of getting the sport off the ground and more popular in Pittsburgh. As of right now, there are no official courses in the city. They’re trying to change that!

Learn To Play Stones Demo Night

To grow the Pittsburgh Stones community, they’re hosting a Learn To Play Stones demo night. You’ll get a feel for how to throw, how scoring works, and the rest of the basics!

Head to the closest official course at Crooked Tongue Brewing in Edinburg on Saturday, June 28th from 4pm – 9pm to learn by watching, by playing, or just kick back with incredible food and drinks.

No gear or experience needed! Just show up and you’ll be a Stones player by sundown.

Can’t make it to the demo night? The next event will be a pop-up in Bethel Park (south of Pittsburgh) on Saturday, July 19th! Learn how to throw and play some casual games with beginners and pros.

How To Play Stones: The Basics

Typically played 2v2, each player throws 2 stone balls on an outdoor course with natural, but strategically arranged, obstacles.

The goal? Get the closest to the mark, a smaller stone ball thrown at the beginning of the round.

Whichever team’s stone is further from the mark is who throws next. Throw until you’re closer or out of all 4 stones. Then, add up your points for the round based on who’s closest.

Repeat play until you reach the end of that stretch of the course (like a hole in golf or mini golf). There are 5 stretches on each course, so you have plenty of chances to get ahead in points!

Plus, at any point after the game has started, you can throw from your current stretch to the X, a bonus area near the middle of the course worth double points!
