Heard all about Fallingwater but haven’t visited yet? Or maybe you went there on a field trip as a kid and are thinking it’s time to go back after all these years!

Whatever the case, this is one iconic outdoor destination that’s not to miss in Western Pennsylvania. See how architecture can blend in with its natural environment at Fallingwater.

What is Fallingwater?

Fallingwater is a National Historic Landmark and on the UNESCO World Heritage List. On the grounds is a mesmerizing house on top of a waterfall designed by renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Wright designed this house in 1935 as a weekend and retirement home set in a relaxing space for the famous Kaufmann family department store owners. Fallingwater is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most lauded architecture works, and his goal was to bring together the harmonious union of art and nature.

Visiting Fallingwater

If you purchase one of the guided tour tickets, guests will hear in-depth stories on the house’s architectural features, as well as the background of the Kaufmann family. Guided tours are highly recommended to get the most out of your visit at Fallingwater.

General guided tours start at $42/person (guests must be over 6 years old). Exterior-only access starts at $29.

Longer in-depth tours begin at $89, which allow for additional time on the tour. This is the only tour that allows personal photo taking inside of the room as well. Note that guests ages 9+ are permitted on this tour.

Fallingwater is open throughout the year from 8am – 4pm, except on Wednesdays. Due to peak seasons, such as in the summer, tickets can sell out well in advance. Plan your trip ahead of time to book your desired day and time (especially if you are wanting to make a weekend visit). Reserve your ticket online in advance.

Know Before You Go

Photo/Video Rules: You can take photos and videos anywhere outside of the house, but photos inside the house are only allowed with the in-depth guided tours. No videos can be taken inside, regardless of type of ticket.

Timing: Plan to arrive around 30 minutes before your tour time to give you a chance to park and check in. There is a museum store and cafe on site, as well as a free exhibit at the Speyer Gallery to browse. Everything is near the check-in desk upon guests’ arrival. Note the only restrooms for public access are located here as well.

How to dress for the tour: Wear comfortable shoes and clothes since a lot of walking is involved—both outdoors and inside the house (including steps). The pathways leading to the house can be uneven so flat, closed-toe shoes are recommended. Also to mention is the weather! Since this is PA, we know it could rain at any time. Dress appropriately for any chance of rain, but also prepare for sunny weather with sunscreen, sunglasses, and even bug spray. The staff will also provide free umbrellas for use during your visit.

House maintenance: Preservation work is currently being done on the outside of the home. This is part of the World Heritage Preserved project. So pardon the updates as you take a tour!

Driving directions: Fallingwater is located at 1491 Mill Run Road in Southwest Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, about 90 minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh. For help on locating Fallingwater, see here.

Enjoy the views! This is a bucket list trip after all, so take in all the beauty and nature in this beautiful setting. For more information on Fallingwater, visit their website.
