Reimagined and relaunched in March 2025, the BNY Fab Lab digital maker space has been giving Carnegie Science Center visitors access to cutting-edge technology and hands-on experiences like never before.
Included with general admission and open daily, this 3rd floor digital fabrication studio is making high-tech creativity accessible to visitors of all ages. It’s a robust digital maker space that allows visitors to explore, experiment, and participate with the latest 3D printers, laser cutters, and design tools.
BNY Fab Lab visitors can bring their ideas to life with laser cutters for engraving and cutting wood, acrylic, and other materials or utilize 3D printers for creating detailed models and prototypes or use vinyl cutters for making stickers, decals, and custom designs or even use CNC (computer numerical control) routers for woodworking and custom projects.
Set up to integrate well with other exhibits and programming, BNY Fab Lab’s hands-on activities and workshops have been engaging visitors. It’s a great space for school field trips, corporate partners, and even ready for fun during after-hour events like 18+ and 21+ nights.
During select museum hours, visitors can join Fab Lab Art and Science Hangout (FLASH) sessions, featuring short, hands-on activities centered around rotating themes designed to build confidence in digital design and fabrication. Visitors can also register for ticketed 60-minute workshops for improving specific skills and techniques.
“Unlike traditional workshops that focus solely on the final product, BNY Fab Lab emphasizes skill-building and confidence in the creative process for both visitors familiar with digital design tools and those new to but eager to explore new technology,” said Jason Brown, Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of Carnegie Science Center. “We’re expanding programming, introducing the latest technology, and providing an entirely new way for visitors to engage with digital fabrication.”
