There are certain things that happen during this time of year that are synonymous with the holiday season, whether it be stopping by Prantl’s or Oakmont Bakery for that perfect holiday treat or stopping by Starbucks for a peppermint-coffee-concoction. And let’s not forget about those season-ending doorbuster deals on that cashmere sweater you have been lusting over since mid-July.
Yet there is one holiday tradition in Pittsburgh that has truly stood the test of time with adults and children alike. P.I. Tchaikovsky’s stunning score of The Nutcracker still makes for the perfect holiday escape for the whole family.
Unlike New York’s version with George Balanchine, Pittsburgh’s own version of the ballet is set at the turn-of-the-century within the Steel City, with all of the original characters from the show, with many different references to the city, as well as to the famous Kaufman’s department store.
With an interchanging cast list, patrons will be witness to an overall of five scene changes, along with dozens of dancing filling the stage, along with nearly 150 plus costumes in all.
Also, be on the lookout for modern dances from the dancers, which are likely to be randomly incorporated within the classical dances of the show, in order for the children to become more entranced with the show.
Guests will also have the opportunity to attend for two separate performances; one for a student matinee and another for a sensory-friendly performance, where those with Autism, or any other special needs can watch the show.
Patrons still have the opportunity to purchase tickets for The Nutcracker, which will be running through December 27th, 2018 at the Benedum Center.
