Someone’s building a house in the heart of Market Square.

Crazy, we know! But that’s not even the wildest part. This particular house is made entirely of ice. And if you head down the city center on January 31 and February 1, you can check it out for yourself.

What’s the deal, you wonder? Allow us to explain.

Cool down for what?

The ice house is part of the Dollar Energy Fund’s Cool Down for Warmth event. Now in its third year, the frozen structure in the Square brings awareness to and raises money for local families who can’t afford to pay their heating bills.

Here’s how it works: Willing participants sign-up through the event’s Crowdrise page. Then, they’re assigned a timeslot to sit in the ice house, where they remain until they’ve met their fundraising goal ($1,000 for individuals or $2,500 for teams).

Donations can be phoned in, dropped off, or submitted through Crowdrise. Basically, you’re going to be phoning, texting, and emailing for donations while you freeze your buns off. But let’s be honest, it’s totally worth it for this great cause.

Best of all, the donations will receive a dollar-for-dollar match from partnering utility companies and 100% of the donations and matching funds will be used to provide utility assistance grants to local families in need through Dollar Energy Fund’s Hardship Program.
